López was known for his defensive skills and leadership behind the plate. He set a major league record for career games played as a catcher (1,918), which stood for decades.
After his playing career, he became a successful manager, leading the Cleveland Indians (1951–1956) and Chicago White Sox (1957–1965, 1968–1969). His teams were the only ones to interrupt the Yankees' dominance in the American League pennant race during the 1950s.
