He had a solid career, compiling 1,325 hits, 47 home runs, and 501 RBIs, with a .300 batting average. Allen played for several teams, including the Cincinnati Reds, New York Giants, St. Louis Cardinals, Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago Cubs, and St. Louis Browns.
After his playing days, Allen became the head baseball coach at Yale University from 1946 to 1968, where he coached future U.S. President George H.W. Bush. He also contributed to baseball beyond coaching, writing instructional books and developing the Cadaco-Ellis board game "All-Star Baseball", which remained popular for decades.
