Monte Irvin played in the Negro Leagues from 1938 to 1948 with the Newark Eagles. He then transitioned to Major League Baseball, playing from 1949 to 1956. His primary position was left fielder, though he also played as a first baseman and shortstop.
In MLB, he played for the New York Giants (1949–1955) and the Chicago Cubs (1956). Irvin was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1973.
Irvin was a key figure in baseball history, helping pave the way for integration in the sport. He was a mentor to Willie Mays and played a crucial role in the Giants' 1951 National League pennant and 1954 World Series championship
