Born in Buffalo, New York, in 1921, Spahn was named after President Warren G. Harding. His baseball career was interrupted by World War II, where he served in the U.S. Army and earned a Purple Heart. He returned to baseball and became the winningest left-handed pitcher in MLB history, finishing with 363 career wins. He was a 17-time All-Star, won the 1957 Cy Young Award, and led the league in wins eight times. His pitching philosophy was summed up in his famous quote: "Hitting is timing. Pitching is upsetting timing."
